Through the magnificent mangroves and gazing at the endless skyline of the Indian Ocean during golden hour, the Bali Sea Turtle Conservation Tour has given our students a new appreciation for mother nature, and a glimpse of what we as young people can do to protect it.
20 of our S3-5 students had the chance to experience Bali, Indonesia in a whole new light. Besides the bustling culture and scenery that wraps the city as a tourist destination, they visited the Ekowisata Mangrove Batu Lumbang, a huge human-grown mangrove forest located within the 1,373-hectare Tahura Ngurah Rai conservation area just 15-minutes from the city. Participants joined a guided boat tour around and inside the mystical forest where many birds, insects and marine life reside, before getting their hands dirty and contributing to the conservation of the forest themselves. It was humbling to feel like we were part of something bigger, witnessing the work that many have done to preserve nature even in the midst of rapid modernisation.
Another notable highlight was spending time at Bali’s Turtle Conservation and Education Centre (TCEC), gaining incredible insight into sea turtles as well as getting up close with them. What made the visit special was the chance to take care of injured sea turtles, they scrubbed their tanks and made “sashimi” for the turtles to enjoy. Under the professional guidance of the passionate staff at the centre, everyone left with a big smile on their face, feeling proud and fulfilled as ever.
The conservation tour was a great chance for our students to experience what can be done to protect our environment up close. Above all, the locals were heartwarmingly hospitable which made the service tour feel just like a special vacation. This was the perfect mix of culture, knowledge and nature.
