AFS Global Citizenship Education Project

The AFS global citizenship program, aims to empower young people to gain positive knowledge and values to act as an active global citizen, and to implement the knowledge to help create a more equitable and sustainable world.

The program starts on the 13th of September, the selected students engaging in 20 hours of immersive activities. The classes helped students fully grasp the meaning of the sustainable development goals, learning how different concepts address social issues, for example by telling them the difference between ‘equity’ and ‘equality’, and how these are used in different situations. During the classes, students experienced memorable activities such as the scene acting activity. It involves us getting into groups, and based on the picture that is provided with, and acting out the scene, but from the perspective of a certain character in the picture. It allows students to understand the thoughts of the person in their perspective and why they would do such a thing at that moment that may seem bizarre or unconventional to others from their perspective.

The skills and knowledge learnt during the classes were extremely valuable and worthwhile because during the proposal competition while writing the proposal, students considered the different needs of the people by thinking in their shoes, and whenever students encountered an issue, they would think back to the lessons and be inspired by the knowledge of the ways demonstrated to help solve the sustainable development issue.
