“Inspiration <> Aspiration” – How Cambridge Programmes Inspired Us

~4B Ingrid Wong – History Programme

This summer, 20 aspiring doctors, lawyers, engineers, historians and litterateurs from our school, along with many more from St. Stephen’s Girl’s College, Ying Wa Girl’s School, St. Clare’s School, Marymount Secondary School, Ying Wa College and Kellett School had dedicated two full weeks to pursuing their passions at Cambridge Programmes 2025.

The programme, divided into 5 courses, allows us to explore our fields of interest through university-style lectures, memorable trips around Cambridge and London, staying at Churchill College, as well as immersive class activities and workshops led by our passionate professors and mentors. All aimed at providing us with the authentic Cambridge experience and preparing us for the paths we will take after secondary school.

Our days were filled with intensive learning, but were never boring. After breakfast, we would head straight to lessons for our respective courses. In the History Programme, Dr. Thomas Tyson gave the most insightful and fascinating lectures to his students, he also never failed to keep it interactive. Not only did we have the chance to analyse primary sources ranging from an actual coin from the Roman Empire to a gas mask from WWII, we also went to IWM Duxford with the engineering students to see historic aircrafts. It was unbelievable to be standing directly below the breathtaking Concorde 101 and the planes used in the Normandy landings.

Going beyond our classrooms, we took a day trip to London where we visited the UK Parliament and saw The Phantom of the Opera at its very home, His Majesty’s Theatre. The tour at the Parliament felt the utmost precious as, unlike other tours, we were not allowed to take photos once inside. It was hard to believe that we were standing in the same space where figures like Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, and the Kings and Queens of England once stood. There, we witnessed the history of the Houses of Parliament unfold as the tour guide explained the background of each piece of architecture and painting to us.

The two weeks spent at the programme was a surreal experience: To be surrounded by like-minded individuals, equally eager to expand their knowledge and experiment with learning methods that were new to us; to be guided by committed teachers welcoming our uncertainties with open arms and reassurance; and lastly, to leave with reluctance and an itch for more, knowing the opportunity was truly something to be grateful for. The growth we experienced is evident, and I am sure the memories we had in the programme will stay with us for much longer than we can even imagine.
