From 5 to 10 July 2025, 20 of my schoolmates, along with 60 from La Salle College and St. Paul’s Secondary School, went on a joint-school study tour in Shanghai and Hangzhou, China. The tour aims to provide an insight into the economic and technological development in the regions.
On the first day, we visited Xihu after we set foot in Hangzhou. We appreciated the breathtaking view of the renowned lake under the golden sunlight. After experiencing the lush greenery around us amidst the urban city, we visited the Zhejiang Hangzhou Asian Games Museum and Zhejiang Museum (Zhijiang Branch) on the second day, delving deeper into the city’s cultural heritage.
After that, we visited the Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City Urban Exhibition Hall to learn more about the technology developed by companies in this smart city before departing for Shanghai. In Shanghai, we stopped over at the Bund, where we stood in awe at the captivating skyline and Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, bustling with the locals’ vibrant energy.
During our stay in Shanghai, we had the opportunity to visit Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd (COMAC) and Tencent, two companies which play major roles in shaping the future of aviation and technology. We also toured Meetsocial, Shanghai Dewu Information Group Co., Ltd. (Poizon) and Ele.me, companies considered to be e-commerce innovators with technology that meets both merchants' and consumers’ needs. To understand how artificial intelligence facilitates human advancement, we visited SenseTime, an AI company with operations across the globe. We were lucky enough to visit SAIC Corporation Limited, a large-scale automobile manufacturer which uses high-level technology to elevate its products and make them more sustainable. We had glimpses of state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technology, which facilitated the rapid expansion of the various companies. There were also demonstrations from the employees and detailed explanations regarding innovative projects.
Not only did we experience how vital technology is in our everyday lives, but we also engaged in activities with two schools: Fudan University and HD Shanghai School. We interacted with students from the schools enthusiastically and had a taste of their school life. Through this meaningful exchange activity, we learnt further how to communicate with others and understand educational values through different learners’ perspectives. Although we spent little time with them, I am sure we will never forget this encounter.
Despite starting the tour as strangers to Shanghai, all of us were reluctant to leave such lovely people and a remarkable place behind. Nevertheless, we know that these memories will forever remain unforgettable in our hearts. If you are interested in experiencing different cultural experiences and learning about various industries, do not hesitate to take part in the upcoming excursions. Undoubtedly, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
