New Zealand Ecology Tour 2025

Conserving and Protecting Nature

~Carly Siu 4D

albatrosses soaring, kiwi birds strolling, and whales sprouting, New Zealand truly is a wildlife haven. This July, fourteen of our students embarked on an 11-day Ecology Tour around the country. We set our sights on learning conservation ideas and appreciating the beauty of nature and biodiversity.

Our first learning spot was the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre, where we learnt more about the importance of plankton and the effects of overfishing. We were even able to observe many marine animals and interact with starfish and hermit crabs. Another highlight was jetting through the braided rivers in Glenorchy, with snowy mountains enveloping us. We learnt more about the native Māori, who once hiked in the same direction in search of Jade to use as currency or raw materials. Other notable highlights include making our own honey in Buzzstop, learning about global warming in the International Antarctic Centre, and five lucky whale encounters at sea in Kaikoura.

Living amidst the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong, we are always caught in a whirlwind of action. Through this tour, I was able to slow down, understand, and develop respect for nature. As a team, we were able to grow together, creating a learning environment in which we weren't afraid to ask questions and search for answers. The vast knowledge we’ve gained and the treasured memories we’ve made will surely last a lifetime.
