Journey to Cleanliness: S2 Form Tour in Taipei
-Karissa Leung 2D

From the 26th February to the 1st March, S2 students commenced a memorable journey during our form tour in Taipei for 4 days and 3 nights, learning about waste management and what Taipei waste treatment is like.

Our exciting trip started at Hong Kong airport, where we said goodbye to our families before heading to Taipei. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our tour guides and staff. At Ming Chuan University, we explored the campus and attended a talk on climate change, net zero, and over-tourism's impact on global warming. On day 2, we visited an incineration plant and a sewage treatment plant where we learnt how to significantly reduce the generation of harmful substances and manage waste better. The facility minimises waste and promotes recycling which was a great learning opportunity. Next we went to JingTong station, a train station in Taipei famous for its scenic views and cultural perseverance. We also visited Shifen Old Street where we released our sky lanterns. They were initially used as military signaling devices. The earliest recorded use was during the Three Kingdoms period to communicate messages across long distances. Overtime, they symbolise hope and good fortune, becoming a must-do activity for tourists and also residents.

On day 3, we visited Tzu Chi Environmental Protection Education Centre, to learn about recycling materials and turning them into eco- items, like eco-fabric. Moreover, we went to Taipower exhibit centre and Yehliu Geopark which had lots of historical rocks and a tranquil view there. Lastly, we went to Raohe Street Night Market, where we got to eat loads of traditional food like fermented tofu, cong you bing and bubble tea. It was very crowded but every corner of the streets were filled with stalls selling mouth-watering foods and game stalls with long queues with adorable prizes. Lastly, on our last day there, we went to the Disaster Prevention Education Centre, where we learnt how to handle life-threatening situations like earthquakes and we even got to experience one in there with the use of modern technology. Before leaving, we got to make our own pineapple cake to take back home, which was delicious and totally a memorable experience.

To summarise, our trip to Taipei was educational, unforgettable, and filled with laughter. I am sure we all had lots of fun there and got even closer with our friends. We are beyond grateful for all the efforts the teachers have put into to make the best out of our trip and all the joyful memories we had. This trip has left eternal emotions in my heart and memories in mind - a truly exceptional experience.

S4: Unveiling Guilin’s Rich History
-Katie Yau 4E24

Our journey in Guilin commenced with a visit to Xiaoyao tower, which offers a
glimpse into Guilin’s past and allows our schoolmates to appreciate traditional
architecture. We then set foot into the JingJiang palace and completed some mock
exam papers to experience what life was like for a student in historical Guilin, as well
as trying the ancient technique of imprinting.
On the second day, we made our way to Elephant Trunk Hill, an iconic symbol of
Guilin. Its resemblance of an elephant drinking from the river captivated
schoolmates’ imagination. Moving on, we ventured into the mystical Reed Flute
Cave Scenic Area, where we were greeted by a world of stunning crystals and
stalactites illuminated by colourful lights. The tour guide shared fascinating tales
about the cave’s historical significance, which made it a highlight of our trip. Our day
concluded with a deep delve into the wonders of chemistry in which we conducted a
few fun experiments.
To start off our third day, we visited Daxu Old Town, where we strolled through the
ancient streets and chased adorable chickens. We then rode a boat cruise for 3
hours, where schoolmates could revel in the breathtaking view of the lush mountains
and shimmering waters of XingPing Li River. Afterwards, we engaged in an
entertaining session of DIY crafting and made lacquered fans and indigo-dyed
fabrics. To wrap up our day, we stopped by at the Yangshuo West Street, finding a
variety of trendy shops and restaurants selling local delicacies. Some schoolmates
bought taro cakes, sweet potato balls, and beautifully designed postcards featuring
Guilin’s scenery.
Rounding off our journey in Guilin, we visited a local university and engaged in
exchange activities. We discovered more about the school’s history through
exploring a museum. We also attended a lecture offered by a professor, where we
learnt more about China’s customs, practices and cultural heritage.
This trip to Guilin is not only rewarding as the visits to Guilin’s landmarks offered
insights into the history of Guilin, but is also an opportunity for schoolmates to
strengthen their bonds. Guilin has shown us the beauty of discovery, both in nature
and in each other.
