Legacies of the Past, Witnesses of the Present
At the beginning of the summer holiday, 20 students embarked on an 11-day journey in the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria to learn more about their history and culture. As a F.5 student, this was both my last excursion in this school and my first time setting foot in Europe, which opened my eyes to the world’s cultural diversity and unique history.
Our trip started off with a city tour in Berlin, visiting famous landmarks such as Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall Memorial and the Jewish Memorial. We learnt about important events in German history with the help of an experienced local guide. This was especially insightful for the students in the group who study history, as they see what was previously limited to textbooks and pictures right in front of their eyes.
Another memorable experience was boarding a river cruise sailing on the Vltava, the longest river in the Czech Republic. We dined aboard and sampled local delicacies as we took in the beautiful scenery along the riverside and appreciated the majestic concert halls, museums and galleries.
The greatest highlight of the tour is the Mozart concert at the renowned Vienna Golden Hall, performed by experienced musicians donning historical costumes. Their passionate performances and virtuoso techniques enthralled the audience, especially those of us who play instruments of our own and recognise many of the pieces performed. It gave us insight into Vienna’s classical music culture, which is why Vienna is renowned as the “City of Music”.
From museums to landmarks, ancient stories to modern history, this trip was a memorable experience for all of us. Whether it is the juniors on another excursion or my fellow seniors enjoying one last trip before bidding farewell to the school, we all made precious memories to be cherished for years to come.
