The unveiling of Xiamen’s cultural richness began with visiting the Gulong Soy Sauce Cultural Park and experiencing soy sauce making firsthand. We were greeted with an array of barrels, all containing sauce, brewing under sunlight. We were further enlightened by performing the production process themselves, soaking soybeans in water and mixing salt into them, ensuring a deeper understanding of an archaic Chinese tradition.
An expedition to the Hua’an Dadi Tulou Cluster, or earthen structures, enhanced our knowledge of architecture in historical times. These objects of fascination also furthered our interest in the culture of Hakka and Minnan as well as the various regional styles of ancient, rammed-earth Chinese architecture, having familiarised ourselves with one particular community.
The tour concluded with an excursion to Jimei University, where we had the opportunity to regard their extensive facilities and visually alluring campuse. The institution also unveiled its abundant history with a museum with archives and information we could comb through and take in, allowing for an immersive, illuminating learning experience.
The journey was brimming with numerous highlights, including visits to a soy sauce exhibition, Tulou Cluster and a provincial key university. These exploits offered insights into the exceptional historical practices of China, and marked Xiamen as a region of impeccable cultural heritage.
