Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara History and Culture Study Tour -- Unveiling the Historical and Cultural Tapestry of Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara
Kimonos
During the Easter holiday, 20 students embarked on a five-day enriching culture study tour in Japan. Throughout this fascinating journey, not only did we get to know more about Japanese culture, but we also explored the historical and cultural connections between Japan and China.
Our participants visited historical sites including Kiyomizu-dera, Ritsu Headquarters Toshodaiji Temple, Osaka Museum of History, Osaka Castle, and Kasugataisha. Japan has had significant cultural and artistic exchanges with China, particularly during the Tang and Song dynasties. Therefore, it was interesting to learn that numerous Japanese buildings have incorporated Chinese elements into their designs during the journey.
Students had an immersive experience wearing kimonos for the first time while visiting the serene Kiyomizu-dera. As we explored the precinct, we paid respect to the local culture and appreciated the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship. The streets surrounding Kiyomizu-dera captivated the group with their Japanese-styled rooftops and vintage charm, inviting us to explore their traditional shops and take photos with them in our kimonos.
Looking out for blessings
One of the highlights was purchasing Omamoris, traditional amulets at the majestic temple. Omamori is a symbol of spreading blessings to loved ones. This added a special touch to the experience, deepening our cultural connection and the desire to share the spiritual essence of Japan with others.
Deer feeding!
We thoroughly explored the bountiful natural offerings of Nara on the fourth day of our visit. Nara Park is home to over a thousand free-roaming deer, known as shika deer. We had memorable experiences interacting with the deer and enjoyed their company. The deer are generally peaceful, and their impressive bows are a delightful sight to behold. Soft baby deer frolic in the open park, and even larger bucks enjoy being pet.
The journey was filled with shared memories and unforgettable moments. From the historical Kiyomizu-dera, to the energetic deer in Nara Park, we not only gained valuable knowledge about Japan, but also recognised the close bond between Chinese culture and Japanese culture.
