Our school has organised a tour to Chungking Mansion and African Centre Hong Kong for our cultural ambassadors to have a taste of the richness of cultural diversity.
Being crowned the ‘hotbed of culture’, Chungking Mansion is the perfect display of cultural diversity. During the tour of Chungking Mansion, students interacted with shop owners, gaining understanding of their life stories and cultural backgrounds, students were even given free food samples like treats made of African sugar canes and an Indian traditional tea called Masala chai. Everyone was incredibly friendly and willing to share, and students fully immersed themselves in the richness of culture.
The tour was followed by a visit to Africa Centre Hong Kong, where students enjoyed a Pan-African buffet featuring a wide variety of authentic African cuisine, including fufu, black-eyed bean stew, Ensalada verde, etc. The bold, fresh, rich flavours were unlike anything students had tried before.
‘The beating heart of Africa is the drum’, the program ended with an African drumming workshop. Students were each given an intricately tattooed drum and learnt the basics. They were then divided into groups to create their own rhythms.
'The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people’. This program gave students a chance to experience the energy and spirit of different cultures, encouraged students to step outside of their comfort zones, and to make connections with different people.
